the photo box ke is a wedding photography and film studio in Nairobi, made for the weddings we grew up in. The chai going round at the mehndi. The jhumka going on at the last minute. The aunties who take the dance floor and don't give it back. We photograph all of it the way it deserves to be seen — as cinema.
Photography and film, together, under one vision, for the same wedding. We take on a limited number of weddings each year, because the work only holds up when there is time to think about it — before the day, during it, and long after everyone has gone home.
Every wedding is its own film, so no two of ours look alike. We think about the story before we arrive — the shape of the day, the people it belongs to, the moments that will still matter in thirty years — and we shoot with that in mind. What comes back to you is not a collection of photographs. It is the day, the way it felt.
Most studios in Nairobi give you photographs or a film, and if you want both, the film goes to a second team who have never met you. We do both ourselves. The stills and the film come out of the same conversation, the same eye, the same week of planning — which is why they end up feeling like they belong to each other. Because they do.
We know these weddings because we come from them. We know the venues and how the light falls in them late in the afternoon. We know the ceremonies without being walked through the order. We know how much of the day happens in a bedroom full of relatives long before anyone reaches the mandap. You should not have to explain your own traditions to the person documenting them.
Get In TouchWe are not trying to be for everyone. We are for the couple who already knows this matters — who has seen work they love, and wants to be certain the person holding the camera understands what they are looking at.
There is a version of your wedding that sits on a hard drive, and a version people actually watch again. We only know how to make the second one.
We keep the year deliberately small. It means we are at the pre-shoot, we are in the planning conversations, we know your family by name before the day arrives — and when it is over, the work comes back when we said it would. Every wedding is different, and we would rather talk about yours than send you a package list. If your date is open, tell us about it.
